Just finish the paper at 7pm.

Just wanted to jot down some of the insights that I get after taking this module.
It’s an open book exam, and so far this is only my second open book exam.
I’ve come to realise that Open Book exam has little or nothing to do with the books when you are in the exam hall.
It’s all the preparation work that you’ve done before hand that matters.

literally speaking, you could not afford the precious time to flip through the books trying to look for answers.

Some of the methods to tackle an open book exam that I’ve gathered are

  1. Make your own notes.
    1. summarise the key points
    2. use tables, charts and flow charts.
    3. mind maps … hmmm not sure, might be too time consuming to make.
  2. Memorise everything
    1. ok maybe not everything but it’s important to internalise some of the concepts.
    2. Some of the concepts where you know it’ll be too time consuming to search around in the book for answers
  3. MUST read through the whole text book at least once
    1. to get a big picture of what it is really about
    2. lecturer’s notes are literally just guidelines
  4. Gather a few friends to draft notes and draw charts
    1. that really saves time!!! a lot of time

Oh ya, although the lecturer kept on reminding us that the questions that will come out in the exam will be conceptual questions. Not much of memorising facts or answers vividly found in the notes. I really have no idea how is it really like until I took the paper just now.

Question that came out are those IQ type questions. Asking you stuff from a different perspective, reverse the normal process.
Most Question gave you a situation, some clues and you have to solve it with what you know. So that’s what they call conceptual. Without a good grasp of the concepts, you really cannot answer the question. Either you know it or you start to flip through the notes to find answers. That is quite a bad move considering you have only 120 minutes for 60 questions, approx only 2minutes per question.

Oh ya… this particular module you can’t afford to skip lecture or fall asleep during lectures because lecturer’s will always let out hints during his lecture.
In fact, there are some area that is not in the notes but the lecturer mention it in class. Those will become potential exam questions.(I did not copy it down… too bad)

Well… next semester, all of us will be back to the 47 people bell curve. I don’t think we’ll be taking any module with people outside engineering science. It’ll be interesting!!!
Let’s see, we have

  1. ESP2106 Principles of Continua
  2. ESP2109 Design Project (Mechanics Properties for first half and Energy "Heat and Mass Transfer" for second half)
  3. MA2501 Differential Equation & Systems
  4. PC2230 Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics
  5. one SS - Changing Landscape? Evolution of a Global City State?
  6. one arts GEM - japanese? well….. or psychology

Study ooo~ study~!!!
I like to study~!
Study gives me knowledge ooo~
Study makes me smart~!
Study ooo~ study~!!

GEM2502 - Home Experiment (REED Switch Motor)

I took this GEM (Modes of Invention) this sem.
Great GEM to take, weekly experiments and one last HOME experiment.
No exam and bidding points not too high.

Here are some photos on my Home experiment.
I’ve made a reed switch motor.
This motor of mine is tweak and seriously optimised so that it could fit in a small plastic container.
Here goes…
Dscf4944 This is a failed attempt. The container is too heavy. The motor is too bulky and can’t turn well. I assume that more magnet will function better but my presumption seems to be wrong.

Dscf4933Proudly present….. my Final Design. It’s a typical sized container.
This motor can spin very fast ooo~ I didn’t measure it myself but I will do it next semester when I am back to WS2.
Oh ya, the motor is now officially displayed in WS2 :Þ

Dscf4936
One of the application of my motor.
To demonstrate the blending of 7 colours really does become WHITE.

Red + Blue = Magenta.
Green + Blue = Cyan
(Cyan).
Red + Green =
Yellow(Yellow).
Light are Additive colours.

Conversely, Paint are subtractive colours.
That’s why Red + Green = Brown instead.

Dscf4946
Another Application of my reed-switch motor. It’s called a Zoetrope.
It’s a primitive animation device. Very cool~!
Refer to Wikepedia to learn more about this little device
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoetrope

Dscf4941
These are the tools and materials that I use to create the Reed switch motor. It’s supposed to be a Home Experiment that’s why we are advised to use just Home materials. Haha… that’s where my habit of keeping junk came into the picture :p

Great GEM to take if you don’t mind spending time every week to come out with weird invention or recreate historical experiments.
No physics pre-requisite, everybody can take, there are BizAd and Arts people taking too.

Great experience~!

How to Get Up Right Away When Your Alarm Goes Off

I should have found this websites earlier…
nevertheless, i’ll try the methods mentioned inside.

http://www.sleepnet.com/rest7/messages/793.html <—(I’m going to try this)

and oh ya… there’s this interesting sleeping pattern called the
polyphasic sleeping method (30 minutes nap every 4 hours continuously).
Maybe one day I could try that… looks interesting :p
http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/10/polyphasic-sleep/
This guy actually tried that for 5 and a half months,
good result, and he updated his blog regarding his ‘experiment’ quite frequently.
One of the major reason that causes him to change back to monophasic sleeping pattern was because the whole world is monophasic, that gives him an 90minutes disadvantage during the day for social interaction.
There are more reasons,

well.. it’s back to biochem and electronics and CTW.
Back to DNA Transcription.

Short Term Goal (26th Nov 2006) Get at least CAP 3.5 in my first semester exam~! (Update 26/1/2007 = only got 2.5 :Þ)

Mid-Term Goal (26th Nov 2006) Finish pre-reading Semester 2 modules during the December holidays. (Update 26/1/2007 = at least 50% is done, but in two weeks the lectures shoot past my pre-read :Þ)

Time passes…

Wah… another 30 days~! ONE month~!
and I’m done with Year 1.
Waalaaooo~~
So fast leee…

Last year at about this time I think I’m still suffering from Chicken Pox :Þ
I still remember the days where I always ’stay’ in BM hall rushing to finish the ASOD video. (I wonder whether all 6th ASOD have seen the video memory~)
Haha… and I still remember that I’m having a hard time choosing universities.
My principle of choosing is simple, just follow God’s plan.
The door just opened widely and here I am two sems off in Engineering Science.

It’s only after I came to Singapore that I finally tasted the Goodness of God’s Will in my life. My spiritual journey are full of ups and downs but ultimately I grew stronger~!

Nostalgic…

Better sleep…. :Þ
